Lagos diverts traffic for 12 weeks on Lagos‑Abeokuta Expressway

The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic management plan ahead of the reconstruction of a section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway between Super Bus-Stop and Ilepo Bus-Stop (inbound Lagos).

The government said the reconstruction, to be handled by the Federal Ministry of Works, will run from March 7 to May 30, 2026, spanning 12 weeks.

According to a Sunday statement signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the main carriageway from Super Bus-Stop to Ilepo Bus-Stop (Lagos-bound) will be completely closed to traffic during the period.

To ease movement along the corridor, motorists heading towards Lagos/Oshodi from Abeokuta or Sango Tollgate have been advised to use alternative routes.

“Option 1- Motorists from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate going to Lagos/Oshodi will be diverted to the BRT Corridor by Super Bus-Stop and exit the BRT Corridor by Pleasure Bus-Stop (Ilepo) to continue their journeys.

“Option 2- Motorists from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate going to Lagos/Oshodi can also go through Ekoro Road to Old Otta Road through Alira Street to link Abeokuta Street to connect Pleasure Bus-Stop to continue their journeys.

“Option 3- Motorists from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate going to Lagos/Oshodi can alternatively go through Abule Egba Underbridge to connect Agege to link their desired destinations

“For the construction period, motorists on the other side of the carriageway, (Abeokuta Bound) will have a through traffic,” the statement partly read.

Osiyemi added that traffic on the opposite carriageway (Abeokuta-bound) will continue to flow throughout the construction period.

For breakdown management, the Commissioner said emergency tow vehicles will be stationed within the BRT corridor to ensure swift recovery operations.

The government urged motorists to remain patient, obey traffic signs and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the corridor to ensure smooth execution of the project.
